In this special flashback edition of Back to the Movies, we take a trip down memory lane to remember 2013’s highly polarizing super-flick, Man of Steel. We take a look at the long and muddled road of development between the 2006 box office flop Superman Returns before casting our verdict on the Chris Nolan/Zack Snyder brainchild. Joining us to review Man of Steel for are recurring GoodTrash guest hosts Alexandra Bohannon and Dustin Sells of The Film SyllabusWe’re also excited to be joined by one of the producers of the upcoming film Electric Nostalgia and the co-founder of Planet Thunder Productions in our discussion of all things Kal-El.

To catch the uninitiated up to speed, Man of Steel is the 2013 Superman reboot Warner Bros is using as the launchpad for their entire DC Cinematic Universe starting with this weekend’s Batman Vs Superman. Upon its release, the film received mixed reviews(56% on RT) from critics and an even more polarizing response from the fans. Many people argued a misrepresentation of Superman’s character, while others accused the film of exchanging pretty visuals for lazy storytelling. Despite the response, the film brought in a respectable $668 million which gave WB enough confidence to green light an entire slate of films.

We’re normally a podcast dedicated to the film straight from the presses, but given the polarizing stigma that has reared its head online in the wake of the Bat-sequel, we decided this movie was worthy of our very first flashback review special or as we like to call it, Back to the Couches!

We’ve got a really spirited discussion about the film below, but we also want to know what you thought of Man of Steel. Does the last son of Krypton shine brighter than ever, or are there some characters better left off of the big screen? Tune in!
